Review: Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

Mockingjay (The Final Book of The Hunger Games)
I'm just sharing a few overall thoughts after turning the last page of the powerful conclusion to The Hunger Games trilogy. It's hard to talk about these books without giving away any of the plot and I don't think I can truly express in words the jumbled swirl of thoughts and emotions this book has created in me. I almost feel like I'm living in the aftermath of having survived a war myself - a raw combination of heartache, anger, and disappointment, but also hope and a glimmer of happiness.

Did it end the way I wanted it to? Not really. But after finishing it and reflecting on it, I know that the story couldn't have ended any other way. The things that happened had to happen. They were inevitable, they were real; it ended the way it was supposed to. It was awful. It was beautiful. It was perfect.

If you haven't read this series because you don't think it's for you, or you don't like sci-fi, or dystopian, or even YA, I urge you to reconsider. I don't think I've ever read anything quite like this. This is a great story with some scary parallels to our own reality. It's a story that offers plenty of food for thought - one that will make you question the world we live in, make you think twice about the way people treat one another, the forms of suffering that have been termed acceptable in times of war and self-defense. It's also an edge-of-your-seat page-turner with an intense, imperfect heroine and a heartbreaking love triangle. Excellent reading.

This entire trilogy gets a whole-hearted 5 Stars from me.

  1. I loved the entire series. Mockingjay knocked the breath out of me. I think it was close to perfect, even if I'm not sure how much I like it. Mockingjay is such a powerful book!

  2. Thanks for visiting my mailbox yesterday.

I agree with you. It didn't end exactly how I'd have liked it to, but think of it this way, it could have been even worse. I was anticipating a few deaths that never happened.

  3. I haven't read this series yet but I have got the first book on my TBR pile to start later this week. I must admit I'm slightly nervous about starting the series after all the hype!

I'm glad you enjoyed the series so much :)
