Teaser Tuesdays: The Kitchen House

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two "teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page

BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

The Kitchen House: A Novel     "Do you have a girl?" I asked, and his smile was so warm I wanted to touch his arm, though of course I didn't.
"Why, no," he said. "Do you have anyone in mind?"
"How about Belle?" I asked anxiously.
He became serious. "She could never be my sweetheart," he said. Before I could ask why, he added, "We could never marry. You know that. It would be against the law."
I hadn't known that and didn't understand but didn't want to appear young and ignorant, so I said nothing.

The American Historical Fiction Group on Goodreads is reading and discussing this book, and the author is participating in a Q&A discussion, if you're interested!

  7. Yes, it's a race issue, but I haven't actually gotten to this point in the book yet. The narrator is white and I'm assuming the gentleman in question is white, too, because Belle is black. (This takes place in eighteenth century Virginia, btw)
