Quick Review: First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones
From the Back Cover:
Charley Davidson is a part-time private investigator and full-time grim reaper. Meaning, she sees dead people. Really. And it's her job to convince them to "go into the light". But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (like murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she's been having about an entity who has been following her all her life...and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be something else entirely. But what does he want with Charley? And why can't she seem to resist him? And what does she have to lose by giving in?
My Thoughts:
Fun, Fun, Fun! A great read from beginning to end! And what a great start to a promising new series. With this first book Darynda Jones has put all the elements into place for a long and successful career for Charley Davidson. She's a one-of-a-kind heroine. Charley's kind of like a cross between the Ghost Whisperer and Sookie Stackhouse, but she's whip-smart and smart-ass. She has the big boobs, too, and she's even named them: Danger and Will Robinson. But her tough-girl persona is really just a shield for her big heart. She's learned the hard way that people have a hard time accepting her special talents, and she doesn't let anybody get too close.
She's got not one, but two hot heroes: the Bad Boy love interest, the Good Guy who wants to be the love interest, and a lot of delicious future possible scenarios. She's also surrounded by a cast of colorful supporting characters--both living and dead--who help Charley solve her cases, and who are very entertaining in the process.
I loved every minute of this book and could not put it down. It's smart, sexy, funny, suspenseful, and at one point I even shed a tear. The story premise is great, combining the real world and Charley's PI business with a paranormal twist that opens up a world of story possibilities, and I don't think there will be a shortage of deceased murdered people seeking justice. Add in some crime-busting excitement, some adult language, and some hot sex, and voila! You have my new favorite series. Second Grave on the Left will be released in August. Yay!
