Teaser Tuesday: Stay

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

Grab your current read
Open to a random page
Share two "teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page

BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! Share the title & author, too, so that others can add the book to their TBR Lists!

This week my teaser comes from Stay by Deb Caletti, in which eighteen-year-old Clara tells us a tale of an abusive relationship. I'm about halfway through, and so far it's wonderfully written; alternating chapters of how the relationship developed and deteriorated with chapters of Clara trying to come to terms with herself in a new life. There are so many great quotes in this story, it was hard to just share one! But I forced myself. From page 158:

StayA person shows signs--of clutching on too fast, of being needy, of not hearing the word "no", of jealousy, of guarding you and your freedom. But the signs can be so small they skitter right past you. Sometimes they dance past, looking satiny, something you should applaud. Someone's jealousy can make you feel good. Special. But it's not even about you. It's about a hand that is already gripping. It's about their need, circling around your throat.

Good, huh? The author is doing a fabulous job portraying this relationship. I can't put this book down.

  1. Great pick! Sounds like the author definitely may have some personal knowledge of what that type of relationship is like. It sounds like a really great read!

  2. That's an intense teaser -- taut and pretty sounding, but captures the voice of someone who is allured by the danger and perhaps apprehensive?

  5. Sounds awesome. Very descriptive which makes it feel really real and kind of scary knowing that people go through what Clara's going through. Great teaser!
