Spoiler-Free Quick Review: Silence by Becca Fitzpatrick

From the Back Cover:

Nora Grey can't remember the past five months of her life. After the initial shock of waking up in a cemetery and being told that she has been missing for weeks--with no one knowing where she was or who she was with--she tries to get her life back on track. Go to school, hang out with her best friend, Vee, and dodge her mom's creepy new boyfriend.

But there is this voice in the back of her head, an idea that she can almost reach out and touch. Visions of angel wings and unearthly creatures that have nothing to do with the life she knows. And this unshakable feeling that a part of hers is missing.

Then Nora crosses paths with a sexy stranger, whom she feels a mesmerizing connection to. He seems to hold all the answers...and her heart. Every minute she spends with him grows more and more intense until she realizes she could be falling in love. Again.

My Thoughts:

This was one of my most anticipated books of the year. I loved Hush, Hush and Crescendo and I LOVE Patch. I even went out and paid full price for the hardcover special edition at Walmart on release day.

Silence started off great. Nora wakes up in a cemetery to discover she's lost five months of her life. Nora not remembering Patch?? That's a fantastic plot twist with so much potential, and for the first 300 pages I couldn't put the book down. I liked that it took so long to find out what happened to Nora after Crescendo's cliffhanger ending. But then the story started to spiral out of control. All of these extra rules about mind tricks and special powers and "devilcraft" started showing up in convenient places and extra characters popped up everywhere. One of the things I liked best about Crescendo was that Nora started stepping up and had to get herself out of the scrapes she got herself into, but she backtracks in this one. She made some stupid decisions and had to rely on others to save her. And what had been my favorite part of these books, that all-consuming sexual tension between Patch and Nora, lost its zing. I actually found myself skimming. And I hung on every word in the first two books. I know I sound vague because I'm trying to avoid spoilers, but bottom line is I didn't think it was as good as it should have been. It lacked the urgency and intensity of its predecessors. And that bonus scene from Patch's POV that I was drooling to get to? Eh. Nothing special.

I'm not saying this book doesn't have its good points, and if you're a fan of the series, you gotta read it, but this fan is going to hope for more out of Book Four.

My Rating:  3.5 Stars out of 5

  1. I haven't read Hush Hush yet. It's waiting patiently for me to read it, but I haven't gotten around to it. So many books, and not enough time to read them.

  2. I was so looking forward to this book. Not so much after reading your review. I think I'll just wait until I can get it at the library. I hate to buy a book and end up skimming it. I didn't realize there would be a book 4. Maybe the story is being dragged out too far?

  3. @Beth: Don't let me discourage you from reading it! I've only seen two other critical reviews so far, so I appear to be in the minority. I thought this would be the end, too, but right before it was released she announced a fourth book.
