Eva Ward returns to the only place she truly belongs, the old house on the Cornish coast, seeking happiness in memories of childhood summers. There she finds mysterious voices and hidden pathways that sweep her not only into the past, but into the arms of a man who is not of her time.
But Eva must confront her own ghosts, as well as those of long ago. As she begins to question her place in the present, she comes to realize that she too must decide where she really belongs.
My Teaser:
This time last year I read my first novel by Susanna Kearsley, The Winter Sea, and I was completely swept away and affected by it. It's one of my all-time faves, and introduced me to this wonderful British author. I've been working my way through her backlist (slowly, for her novels can be hard to find in the U.S.), and The Rose Garden is her newest. From page 59:
"I've always rather liked the Celtic view of life, that this world and the next one aren't so separate from each other. My grandmother believed that. She was Welsh, you know--a true Celt, through and through--and if you'd told her you'd heard whispers in your walls, she would have taken it in her stride," she said with certainty. "She would have said you'd heard the voices of the people living at Trelowarth, sharing space with us, but in another time."
